Our History
Through the years, Kirkland Preschool has called many local buildings home and now we have our own campus on 2nd Street, and this time, we are here to stay! Acquiring this property was possible only with the aid of our community. We gratefully thank Galen Page, Windermere Realty, and the Baskin and Weber families who purchased the former Kirkland Montessori building so we could have our own campus.
Over our more than 50 years in the Kirkland area, teachers and staff have found great joy in fostering a timeless learning environment where students can respond to our active hands-on teaching style. It is so remarkable to have the opportunity to see little faces develop into amazing adults, and reconnect with many when they entrust us with their own children.
By the way, that first little preschooler, back in 1969? Rob Pickering and his wife Cherry Pickering, now own and operate Snapdoodle Toys, with many fun locations!
Kirkland Preschool opened in 1969 when Jane Pickering couldn't find a preschool that suited both her and her son, Rob. From the beginning, she wanted to be sure children could be actively involved in their education.
In 1975, Elna Duffield merged her home child care with Kirkland Preschool, identified our moniker "Where Children Learn By Doing" and has been involved with the school ever since.
In the spring of 1978, Elna needed some help, and Carolyn, towing her 2 year old son and her viola, came for a day ...and also hasn't ever left.
As the school grew and the school's philosophy became more defined, we made other delightful friendships with teachers who enjoy facilitating lively and imaginative learning.
